I have the thin 2 bulb 48" coralife t5 fixture. When I turn it on it flashes on and off for a few seconds, then goes off. Is this a bulb or fixture problem?

Sounds like the bulb isn't connected right or it may be a ballast problem. Easy way to see if its the bulb is to move the two lights and it the bad light flickers in the opposite side its a bulb issue, if not its a ballast or connection.

Those slimline ESU fixtures were a great idea in theory... they just were poorly made. everything about them is subject to fail randomly.

There's a video that may be of some use for you on Aquarium-Lighting at http://www.saltwaterhub.com/Aquarium-Lighting.shtml I've been finding the site useful.
