I have I guess been given the leftovers from our old tank as "mine." I have been staring at this 30 gal empty tank for over 2 months. (its right beside my computer desk so I see it a lot) I have no ideas on what would be cool to do with it. I toyed with the idea of a small planted but I don't want the hassle of fresh water. I'm up for any good suggestions on what to do with it and ya'll seem to have pretty neat tanks so I trust your ideas and judgement.
Thanks

Hi Adriene. I'm new to the forum, but have been keeping aquariums for about 7 years now. Depending on the shape of the tank, a 30 gallon aquarium could be a great seahorse tank and I think Jason actually has some in stock. I can't say I've ever done a seahorse tank, but it's on my wish list. If you have any interest in that, do some reading about them and I think you'll be sold. Captive bred makes them so much easier since they won't need a constant live food supply. Just an idea. Other than that, there's a bunch of cool single species tanks you could do, both freshwater or saltwater. Or, you could try a cool biotope of some kind, or a tank with one species only of coral. Grow out a frag or a couple of frags, keep the tank pristine and well cared for and see if you can induce some type of sexual propagation. Again, just a few ideas.

I have an Oceanic 30 that I used as my primary reef for quite a few years before I moved to the 120. Now I'd probably use T5s but I had a 175W MH and two 110W VHOs when it was running. It had around 50lbs or so of rock with a variety of SPS. I think the downfall was the size sump I could fit in the stand. I used a 20L and an AquaC Urchin Pro was about the limit for the skimmer with the return pump and no 'fuge.
I really think I could have ditched the sump and used a HOB AquaC but I liked the bit of extra volume the sump added....

Dedicate a 30 to a species like an angler. A little colored angler would live his whole life contentedly in that size.
